A South Sudanese human rights group is calling upon the deputy minister of Interior, Salva Mathok, to step down so a full investigation can be carried out into the killing of a traffic police officer.

The body of a young man identified as Banyjioth Mathoat Tap from Bul Community was found on 30th March in Thong Piny area of Juba.

The executive director of the South Sudan Human Rights Society for Advocacy, Boutros Biel, says it is impossible for a fair police investigation to be carried out when the leader of the police himself may be a crucial part of the criminal investigation.

“There is nowhere you can find the same institution where a person, a leader, who has been accused [of a crime] can still be in office and assume that there will be fair investigation,” Mr. Biel told Eye Radio.

“No, I think he has to resign to pave way for investigations and there if he is found not guilty, then he will be reinstated,” he argued.

“You cannot sit on a case you have been accused of and assume to make a fair judgment,” he added.

Several attempts were made to reach deputy minister Salva Mathok for a comment but he was unavailable.
