The former leader of Cuba, late Fidel Castro, was a key inspiration to the liberation struggle for independence, a member of the SPLM Political Bureau has said.

Fidel Castro died last week, aged 90.

Akol Paul Khordit, who is also the Deputy Minister of Information, says all movements that fought for the liberation of poor people have lost a loved one and father with the death of Fidel Castro.

“The death of Fidel Castro – to all the revolutionary movements across the world…that fought for the emancipation of poor people, of the disadvantaged – have lost a loved one and a father,” he stated.

“And among these movements is the Sudan People’s Liberation movement, the SPLM.”

According to the BBC, Fidel Castro survived more than 600 assassination plots by the American Criminal Investigation Agency to become the longest serving non-royal leader of the 20th Century.

As leader of the Cuban Revolution, he created a communist state in America’s backyard that still survives today.
