South Sudan’s Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management has called for collective action from the International Community to find durable solutions for the humanitarian crisis facing returnees and refugees in the country.

Albino Akol Atak is participating in a four-day 74th session of the Executive Committee of UNHRC’s High Commissioners in Geneva, Switzerland which began Monday.

While addressing the meeting on Monday, Minister Atak said the government has adopted an action plan to address the situation of returnees, refugees, Internally Displaced Persons, and host communities.

He said the government approach is now ready for implementation but faces financial difficulties.

Minister Atak called on the international community and partners to support the strategy for durable solutions to the crisis.

“Over three hundred and seventy thousand South Sudanese have returned, and the situation is overwhelming madam chair,” Atak told the meeting.

He further said he is pleased that his government adopted what he termed as the National Durable Solution Strategy and Plan of Action with the support from IGAD and UNHCR to address the displacement crisis.

According to Atak, the strategy demonstrates the government commitment “to deliver solutions and highlight the need for a whole society and government approach.”

“Now we are set to operationalize the solution strategy, we call upon the international community and partners to galvanize collective action to support the strategy and delivery of durable solutions.”
