UNMISS says a peacekeeper was wounded in a random shooting around its camp in Malakal yesterday.

The Mission’s Spokesperson, Ariane Quentier, says the peacekeeper, an Indian, sustained injuries after a stray bullet fell into the protection of civilians’ site.

She says the bullets were fired by soldiers within the government troops in the area, but did not say at whom the SPLA was shooting.

“Do call on the parties, in this case on the SPLA, not to fire next to our compound and to respect our compound and bases,” Ms Quentier told Eye Radio.

Efforts to reach the SPLA for a comment have not been successful so far.

Thousands of civilians displaced from their homes by the current conflict have sought shelter at the UN base in Malakal.
