Peace talks resume

Peace talks resumed this morning in Addis Ababa.

Delegates from the government, the SPLM in Opposition and former detainees are participating at the talks.

Civil society, women and religious groups have also been represented.

At the opening session, IGAD chief mediator Seyoum Mesfin said the warring parties must cease hostilities and make peace.

He says the committees that are discussing different themes will start meeting tomorrow to finalize the key issues.

These include transitional security arrangement, leadership and governance, and economy, justice and humanitarian affairs.

“Much work has been done to close the gap between the positions of the negotiating parties in the previous sessions,” Mr Mesfin said.

“We hope the committees will be able to complete their tasks and finalize the harmonization of all thematic areas.”

Women say they suffer as fighting continues.

“Killing of innocent people is going on in South Sudan; children, elderly persons, girls, women the rape is still going on,” said Amer Manyok, women representative.

“All those signatures have become hopeless to the people of South Sudan without implementation.”

Two weeks ago, the government delayed elections until 2017 to allow the warring parties to continue with the peace talks.

The EU says this should not be used to also delay the peace process.
