Gunmen have attacked Anet town, along the border of Abyei Administrative Area and Warrap State on Monday, killing one person and wounding 10 others, a youth leader in the border region said.

The Chairperson of Abyei Youth Union, Chol Lual Mayen said dozens of civilians have gone missing in Rumamer Payam of the Abyei, following the early morning attack.

The assailants from a neighboring area attacked the border town with machine-guns and heavy artillery shelling at dawn, Mayen told Eye Radio.

“This morning around 4 AM, there was an attack, they attacked Aneit and they came from South East and also they came from East and South and it was a gun shelling started from 4am up to 9 AM,” said the youth leader.

“They were shelling from Yankol Barack, and they shoot innocent people and they killed one person and also ten are injured and others are missing, and people are still searching for them.”

He said the situation is tense and that civilians are running to Abyei town. The number of people displaced by the latest conflict is not known.

In May this year, the South Sudan People’s Defense Force established a buffer zone between Twic of Warrap and Abyei Administrative Area.
