Part of the Internally Displaced Persons Camp in Rubkona County of Unity State has been submerged in floodwater after the main dyke broke over the weekend.

The State Information Minister, David Gai Jiejor said an estimated hundreds of households have been displaced from the camp.

“One of these sectors is the one in which the water was leaking yesterday in the morning so there are not too many populated people who have displaced it maybe a hundred people who have been displaced yesterday because of dyke in IDP camp yesterday,”

The government spokesperson downplayed the magnitude of devastation caused by the flooding.

But pictures and video footage cross-checked by Eye Radio speak of a situation.

On Sunday, UN peacekeepers were seen struggling to seal off the dyke that has spewed large volume of water into the camp, submerging makeshift shelters to the roof.

Some IDPs and Rubkona residents termed the build-up of water as alarming and said the camp has been cut off from Rubkona and Bentiu town.

As per April 2022 population count findings, the population of Bentiu IDP Camp stands at 112,329 individuals in 12,017 inhabited shelters according to Displacement Tracking Matrix.
