The newly appointed Commissioner General of National Revenue Authority says he is targeting an average of 40 billion South Sudanese pounds in gross monthly non-oil revenue collection.

Athian Diing Athian made the remarks during his reception ceremony at the NRA headquarters on Tuesday.

He said the benchmark – which is twice higher than the current 16 billion pounds collection – will be achieved in the next financial year by expanding the taxes base.

Athian further said non-oil revenue plays a key role in financing government expenditures including providing service to the citizens.

“NRA should embark on rollout an elaborate tax-based expansion program aimed adjuring up to SSP 40 billion per a month by the end of the coming financial year,” he said.

The NRA boss adds: “That is the target we may not achieve it, but we have to keep our head up looking at that target.”

He also said the institution will strengthen compliance system such as establishment of strategic dry ports at Nimule border point and integrating the electronic system.

The other priorities that he outlined include enhancing alternative dispute, resolution, review exemptions and reduce what he referred to as tax complexity.

President Salva Kiir on June 16 relieved Dr. Patrick Kennedy Mugoya as the Commissioner-General of National Revenue Authority and appointed Athian Diing Athian in his place.

Athian had previously served as the Minister of Finance and Planning up to November 2021.
