The National Legislative Assembly has passed the UN Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

The convention provides for respect of the rights of people living with disabilities and improvement of their situation.

Anthony Lino Makana, Member of Parliament from Western Equatoria State, says the move will help reduce discrimination of people living with disability in the country.

“There needs should be incorporated. For example: public buildings should be made accessible to people with disabilities, whether it is hospitals, whether it is public transport,” Hon Makana said.

The leader of Minority Onyoti Adigo has urged the government to conduct a disability survey to know the number and conditions of people living with disability.

“We should know who the disable people are. The government should conduct a disability survey for evidence base on the planning identity of the issue of disabilities, which I think is very important,” he stated.

The Parliament also passed the Convention for Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. It recognizes the need to raise awareness about cultural heritage and expressions.
