A national legislator has reiterated calls to implement a ban on consumption of small-bottled hard liquors in Juba ahead of the festive season.

Arkangelo Kanawe Minawe said the hard drinks are being abused mostly by teenagers and their consumption increased specially during Christmas and New Year celebrations.

According to Kanawe, the drinks have contributed to the death of serval young people in Juba.

“Since Christmas is coming and the New Year is coming, this small (Jan-faar) or (Star-Gin) is going to take the life of so many young people,” he said.

Kanawe called for crackdown on the alcoholic drinks while addressing an extraordinary sitting of National Legislative Assembly on Thursday.

“I am informing this able August House to collaborate with IGP to impose some laws on those drinks and I learned that the industry or manufacturing of that Alcohol is here in Juba.”

“South Sudanese people also used to import dangerous things (drugs) for young people, and now we have counted many young people who have passed away because of that drink.”

In October, Juba County authorities closed down four factories manufacturing small-bottled alcoholic products in Gumba Sherikat suburb.

The closure comes after Juba Commissioner Charles Joseph Wani banned the selling and consumption of the cheap alcohol in Juba.

The forbidden drinks include Star Gin, Disco Gin, X5 Gin, Boss Gin, Zebra Gin, Royal Life Gin and Royal Special Gin.
