The South Sudan General Medical Council has closed down a medical camp that was set up at Freedom International Hospital in Juda citing non-compliance with regulations.

The medical camp had been initially announced by the visiting medical team from the British Dubai Hospital, affiliated with Freedom International Hospital.

The camp, specializing in orthopaedic and regenerative medicine, featured a team of specialists and consultants and was scheduled to operate from the 15th to the 20th of January.

The visiting medical team had a specific focus on treating conditions such as osteoarthritis, herniated discs, and joint diseases—conditions that are considered rare and not commonly addressed within the medical landscape of South Sudan.

Despite its initial plans to run for six days, the medical camp faced an abrupt closure after only two days of operation, following an announcement by the South Sudan General Medical Council.

The closure was attributed to the hospital’s failure to adhere to the regulations and rules governing the medical field.

The Medical Council justified its decision by highlighting the importance of safeguarding citizens and preventing any potential misconduct, particularly in the medical field.

Dr. Rose Ajak Costa, the Chairperson of the South Sudan Medical Council, explained to Eye Radio that the closure was prompted by safety concerns.

“We went to find out for ourselves the facts around the campaign, and after we talked to the Director-General of the hospital, it was clear that the camp was not registered through the medical council and the procedures they are doing, and the safety is not granted,” said Ajak.

“So, having the concerns of the safety of our citizens, we decided to request them to close down that camping until the documents related to it are looked into.”

“So, we want to inform our citizen that the campaign that is happening now at Freedom International Hospital has been stopped by South Sudan General Medical Council.”

In response to the closure, Surgeon Dario Kuron, the Director General of Freedom International Hospital, acknowledged the decision and admitted that they had not followed the proper procedures and regulations set by the medical council.

Mr. Kuron, however, told Eye Radio that they would promptly comply with the directives provided by the Medical Council.

“They came to make sure that, what has been done there is actually in line with ethics. And since they have said some documentation which has not been in place, so we have to stop this thing temporarily until we got this one sorted this is what they advised us to do.”

“So, we have to comply with them, and they are not saying what we are doing is wrong. It is correct but it’s because of some irregularities in the process.”
