The World Food Program of the United Nations says it has started the distribution of assistance to people displaced by the conflict in Li-Rangu Payam in Yambio.

Last month, fighting broke out in the area between armed youth and the army, resulting in displacement of thousands of civilians.

“We shall be distributing sorghum today and this will be backed up by some non-food items from the other agencies,” said Stephen Moseray, WFP representative in the area.

Over 10,000 internally displaced persons from Li-Rangu are expected to benefit from the items.

“Our intention here in [the former] Western Equatoria is actually to help people produce more food, to build up their own livelihood and not primarily [depend on] food distribution,” he added.

Mr. Moseray said WFP will also distribute food to affected population in Ezo and Gangura areas.
