Hunger bites harder in Pochalla

The hunger situation in Pochalla County of Jonglei State is still critical, as a food aid distributed by the World Food Program is not enough to cover the whole county,” said an official.

“Most of the schools in the county have been closed down due to severe hunger and food shortages,” Gato Cham, State Minister of Rural Development.

“If the situation is not helped very urgently, the area will remain without people; the elders and children are the most affected.

“Most of them have become skeletons.”

Recently, two helicopters supplied some feeding for the children, about 160 cartons, according to officials there.

“It is not enough; even majority are still fleeing to Ethiopia,” Mr. Cham added.

He also said continued insecurity is not helping the situation.

Earlier this month, officials in the county called for humanitarian aid to save citizens after starvation killed at least 3 people and forced more than 5,000 people to flee the county into neighboring Ethiopia.
