Growing insecurity affects Mundri schools

Schools have been closed in Mundri West and Mundri East counties due to insecurity, an official has said.

Last week, a group of armed youth attacked an army garrison in Mundri.

Resultantly, the SPLA soldiers burned down huts and property, according to the deputy governor, Bullen Abiater.

Officials have also reported abduction, raping and killing of women.

The state Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Pia Phillip Michael, told Eye Radio that children could not manage to go to school daily due to this insecurity.

“We have contacted our education cluster in Juba that deals with emergency education, and they are preparing to do some intervention,” Mr Michael said.

“If the children and the communities feel safe in a certain payam, and big number of children are there, then you can establish there a temporary learning facility for those children who are in that location.”

It’s unclear how many pupils and students have been affected by the closure of the schools.

However, Mr Michael said the situation is calm in Maridi County. The state minister stated that the schools that were closed there have reopened.

Meanwhile, the deputy government says a committee has been formed to hold dialogue with local youth.

Bullen Abiater told Eye Radio in Yambio that the seven-member committee will assess the situation and send their findings to the state government.
