Grading of Juba-Bor road halted

Author : | Published: Wednesday, February 18, 2015

The UN mission in the country has stopped the graveling of the Juba-Bor road, according to Jonglei State Governor, John Kong Nyuon.

The Korean contingent of UNMISS graded the road last year and launched the second phase of graveling last month.

“There are people within the UN who are not happy with us. They make their leadership to sabotage a good thing that can be done to the people of South Sudan,” said Governor Nyuon.

“They received a letter from Juba to terminate the construction of the road. They were given orders.”

The spokesperson of UNMISS, Ariane Quentier, says the construction of the road is no longer a priority of the mission.

She says UNMISS is focusing on the welfare of more troops deployed recently by the UN Security Council.

“There have been relooking of the priorities because we have hundreds of soldiers who have been arriving in the last year since Security Council authorized what we call the search, the search of five thousand troops,” said Ms Quentier.

The UN Security Council authorized the deployment of more forces in South Sudan after the outbreak of the conflict more than a year.
