Gov’t claims control of Nasir

Author : | Published: Monday, July 21, 2014

The government says it is still in control of Nasir County, Upper Nile state, after a heavy fighting between the government and the SPLA in Opposition forces, over the weekend.

Army spokesman Colonel Philip Aguer says the SPLA in Opposition forces attacked Nasir in violation of a ceasefire signed two months ago.

“They attacked Nasir at 6 o’clock this morning [Sunday]. The SPLA is in control of the town, and these forces are continuing with the attack on Nasir,” said Col Aguer.

The military spokesman of the SPLA in Opposition Gen. Lul Koang confirmed the fighting. But he says his forces acted in self-defense.

Gen Lul said there was little information available to him on who is in control of Nasir town.

Talks to resolve the seven-month conflict have stalled in Addis Ababa.

Ethiopian Prime Minister said last Friday that the two sides say they want the talks to resume.
