Norway says it has given $6 million to UNICEF as part of the Back-to-Learning Campaign that was launched in February.

It was set to benefit more than 400,000 children who dropped out of school last year in conflict affected areas.

The Norwegian Ambassador to South Sudan, Tone Tinnes, says the ministry of education will work hand-in hand with UNICEF to implement the campaign.

She spoke after a brief meeting with the ministry officials.

“We also talked about implementation of the peace agreement and the security in the country which is very very important for the children to be able….to go back to school,” Ms Tinnes told the media.

The Deputy Minister of Education, Bol Makueng, welcomed the new funding.

“This is a very big and huge support and it needs us as people of South Sudan to thank Norway and remember people who stand with us at this hour of need,” Mr Makueng said.

Most of the schoolchildren affected by the conflict are in Jonglei, Upper Nile, and Unity states.
