Entrepreneurs urged to establish cooperatives

The Department of Cooperatives in Yei River County is encouraging people to form cooperatives that serve as money-lending institutions.

The head of the Department, Emmanuel Dusman Kenyi, said members of the organized forces, boda-boda associations and entrepreneurs should form institutions that will support them financially.

He told Eye Radio from Yei that South Sudanese should develop a culture of saving in order to build on their businesses.

“When you save, you create a pool of money where some of your members can borrow credit at a reasonable interest,” he said.

“This saving and credit cooperatives is managed by the members, it is their own cooperatives, and they are the customers. So if employees can form this type of corporate society, it can be easy for them to access money when they want to borrow –especially at these times when salary delays for over 2 or 3 months.”

Mr. Dusman said that the cooperative savings should enable members to access money at affordable rates.

There are 4 cooperative savings credits facilities already formed in Yei.
