The Secretary-General of the EAC has apologized for the use of South Sudan’s wrong map and flag displayed upon the absorption of Somalia into the bloc, the Undersecretary in the Ministry of East African Community Affairs has said.

A video emerged online purporting the ‘approval of a wrong EAC map following the accession of Somalia at last week’s summit in Entebbe, Uganda.

The three-minute video clip indicated the Chairman of the East African Community endorsed the wrong map of the bloc.

In an animated text, SSG TV reported that the previous correct map was replaced with an incorrect one that sees South Sudan territories, especially the Elemi Triangle, incorporated into Kenya.

Meanwhile, some South Sudanese took the social media to criticize a misrepresented color of the country’s flag.

According to them, a dark blue color was used instead of sky blue.

Responding to the concerns, Beny Gideon, the Undersecretary in the Ministry of East African Community Affairs said, he had written to the regional Secretary General, Dr. Peter Matuki, and clarified the matter.

According to him, Dr Matuki apologized and promised to correct the erroneous map.

“First I want to clarify that the new map of East Africa that you have seen trending online, is not the official map of East Africa. I have already clarified this with the Secretary-General of the East Africa Community, Honorable Dr. Peter Matuki,” Beny told Eye Radio on Tuesday.

“The new map that you have seen online was just a dummy to show the symbolic launch of the new map. Of course, it is unfortunate that such practice occurred when the Head of State and government were in attendance,” he said.

“I already condemned it; I already expressed my concern officially in writing to the Secretary-General and he has confirmed that this is not the official map of East Africa.”

“On the flag of South Sudan, again they have apologized, and it will be corrected because the colour on our flag is sky blue not dark blue as you have seen”.
