Civil society group expresses concern over expected elections

A civil society group says it is deeply concerned about the announcement by the government that the elections would be held this year.

Last week, the National Elections Commission declared that elections would be conducted in June.

Support Peace Initiative Development Organization says in a press release thatholding national elections is not a priority.It says the people of South Sudan are in need of a sustainable Peace.

The organization urged the Government and the SPLM-SPLA in Opposition to urgently end the conflict and bring lasting peace to the country.

It says elections must be conducted ‘only if the country is at peace’ in order to ensure that the elections are democratic, free and fair.
