The SPLA says it is now calm around Bentiu, where government troops have been fighting with the SPLM in Opposition forces.

The two parties started the fighting last week. SPLA spokesman Col Philip Aguer says the last clash was in Nhialdiu area, near Bentiu.

“Generally the situations is relatively stable,” said Col Aguer.

Last week, the UN said it had received reports that the SPLA had taken control of two localities from the SPLA in Opposition forces.

However, the deputy spokesman of the opposition forces, Gatluak Dickson, said his forces tactically withdrew from the areas.

The recent clashes have displaces hundreds of thousands of civilians.

The UN says humanitarian operations in much of South Sudan’s Unity state have “come to a stop”.

It says that more than 300,000 civilians do not have “access to… life-saving assistance”.
