A Sudanese opposition leader says President Omar al-Bashir should ensure that Misseriya armed militants leave Abyei.

Siddig Yousif, the chairman of the Communist Party, said Bashir’s government should also expose those who killed the late Ngok Dinka Chief, Kuol Deng Kuol.

He was speaking in Juba on Monday as part of the delegation of the Sudanese National Consensus Forces paying condolence to the government of South Sudan:

“The brutal murder of Chief Kuol Deng Majok: we think the government of Sudan is responsible for it because the government supports the tribal militias in that area.”

Mister Yousif suggested that permanent solution to the Abyei problem can only be reached by consensus from the Ng’ok Dinka and the Misseriya, without interference from Khartoum or Juba.

“We think that the only solution for the Abyei Problem is for both tribes to sit together in a roundtable conference and come to an agreement – irrespective of the governments of Sudan and of South Sudan,” said Mr. Yousif.

The African Union has proposed a referendum in October for the people of Abyei to decide whether to remain as part of South Kordofan in Sudan or to return to Northern Bahr El-Ghazal State in South Sudan.
