South Sudan Aviation Authority has banned air crafts from flying to Agok town due to insecurity in the area, along the border of Abyei Administrative Area and Twic of Warrap State.

The directive dated October 27, was issued by Captain Subek John David, the Chief Executive of the Aviation Authority.

Subek said “the indefinite suspension of flights to the Agok area due to security reasons”.

The head of aviation authority stated that the order was prompted by an urgent letter from the Chief of South Sudan People’s Defense Force, Gen. Santino Deng Wol.

“Following an urgent and very important letter from Gen. Santino Deng Wol Chok, Chief of (SSPDF dated 27th October 2022, concerning the above-mentioned subject, no clearance should be issued to any Aircraft flying to Agok until further notice by the authority,” reads the Aviation Authority letter.

The Civil Aviation Authority requested the authorities managing the local air strip to immediately implement the order without fail.

Agok, a border town partly contested by Warrap and Abyei, has been faced with unrest for months now.

Early this month, communal clashes in and around the area, involving the two neighboring communities of Twic and Ngok led to the death of 12 people and the wounding of 14 others.

The October 16th clashes erupted despite a commitment to peace by the two communities in Aweil town, Northern Bahr el Ghazal State in April.

The deal was reached under the mediation of Vice President Hussein Abdelbagi, who lead an investigation committee formed by President Salva Kiir.
