Activists condemn rising insecurity in EES

Women activists in Eastern Equatoria State have condemned what they call ‘rampant insecurity’ in the state.

Last week, four people were killed in an ambush along the Torit-Kapoeta road.

Women representing different civil society groups met in Torit yesterday and denounced armed robbery and attacks along the roads between different towns.

Lucy Iliha, a member of the women’s groups, called upon individual actors in the attacks and killing to change their attitudes.

She said such incidents discourage investors and also retard development in the state.

“If they (investors) hear all what is happening along our road it will not be good here we want to give the information that this road is not ours or the people of torit it’s a public road,” said Ms Iliha.

Drivers suspended operations along the Torit-Kapoeta highway since four people were killed in an ambush along the road on Friday. This left the passengers stranded.

The Vice Chairperson of the Women Association for Eastern Equatoria State, Davidika Ikai, says there should be secure movement of people and trade from Juba to Nadapal.

“We don’t want anybody to be killed on the roads. People should be moving, whether you come from Juba, going to Nadapal, at night and day without fear.”
