Abyei asks for chief’s death probe findings

Author : | Published: Wednesday, June 15, 2016

The head of the Abyei Area Administration has appealed to United Nations and the African Union to publish the findings of an inquiry into the killing of paramount chief Kuol Deng Majok.

On the 4th of May 2013, chief Kuol was killed by Missieriya gunmen in an ambush in a convoy belonging to the United Nations Interim Force for Abyei.

The convoy was on its way back to Abyei town from a visit north of the area.

Three days later, the AU formed a committee to investigate the accident.

The Chief Administrator for the Abyei Administrative Area, Chol Deng Alak, told a news conference in Juba yesterday that the people of Abyei were still waiting for the report

Misseriya nomads usually graze their cattle in Abyei during the dry season.

But rejecting them from participating in a referendum to determine the status of the region has been a source of tension in the area.
