The UN Security council says it is ready to impose an arms embargo and additional targeted sanctions on any party that fails to implement its provisions of the recently signed peace agreement to ensure the full implementation of the deal.

In a statement, the UN Security Council says this will prevent the country’s social, political, economic and humanitarian situation, from further worsening due to continued violence.

It says the UN Council is considering “appropriate measures to ensure full implementation of the Agreement…and address any violations or failures of any party to implement its provisions, including through the imposition of an arms embargo and additional targeted sanctions.”

It also says it will swiftly adapt a resolution to update the mandate of the UN Mission in South Sudan, to support implementation of fundamental provisions of the agreement.

President Slava Kiir signed the agreement three days ago, while the SPLM-IO leader, Dr. Riek Machar, and Mr Pagan Amum, the leader of the Former Political Detainees, signed it in Addis Ababa last week.

The council acknowledged the work of the African Union Commission of Inquiry in monitoring, investigating and reporting human rights situation in the country.

It says it encourages the release of the final report, its findings and recommendations to the public as soon as possible.
