A camp leader on Monday called on the government and aid agencies to evacuate about 500 vulnerable South Sudanese refugees faced with a dire humanitarian situation in Ethiopia’s Bahir Dar region.

Franco Mongo, the chairperson of the settlement said the 460 South Sudanese recently fled the bitter conflict in neighboring Sudan.

The refugees have settled at the Kumar refugee camp in Ethiopia’s Bahr Dar region since June.

Mongo said his people have been without relief food for the last three days and risk starving to death if there is no immediate intervention.

“Those who are here in Kumar refugees camp are about 460 South Sudanese, and the security situation in the place that we are in is very dangerous, and there are not any services including medical and foods,” he said narrating their plight in an interview with Eye Radio.

“Now we have three days with no foods, children and even old people are down and we don’t know what will happen in next two days in this period.”

Mongo said the civilians have settled in the camp in the last four months since a vicious conflict erupted between Sudan’s military factions.

“We have spent almost four months here, they just gave one soap to everyone or two soap to all family and no other things like healthy food, we consider ourselves as detainees or bondage.”

Mongo said the refugees camp has been surrounding armed militias and he called for their evacuation from the camp.

He also said one of their biggest worries is the insecurity in the Amhara Region.

“The armed militias are around us with their guns, and when they came on Saturday, they just did some random shooting. We run from Sudan because of guns and war, and we found the same here, there is no different.”

“We are calling on South Sudan government and other international organization to rescued us by immediate evacuation, because in one to two weeks to come without evacuation the situation will be terrible.”
