South Sudan bans Antonov AN-12s

The Minister of Transport, Road and Bridges has issued a circular banning antonov AN-12 planes from using the South Sudan airspace.

Antonov plane EY406 crashed in Juba on Wednesday last week. Witnesses say 41 people were killed in the incident. But official figures are yet to be released.

Minister Kwong Danhier told Eye Radio that the civil aviation has been directed to implement the ban.

Mr Kwong said UN cargo planes will be allowed to travel, but shall not carry passengers.

The travel ban is strictly for the antonov AN-12 planes.

“Not any other cargo because those cargo planes which are airworthy like the ones being used by the UN and any other credible companies are not banned,” Mr Danhier said.

Another plane chartered by the UN crashed on Tuesday in the Upper Nile state capital, Malakal.

All the four crew members aboard survived and were rushed to a hospital for medical checkups last evening.

Mr. Danhier added that the ministry will soon send a team that includes officials of the World Food Program to the scene of the crash for investigation.
