Opposition parties maintian court case against EC

The alliance of political parties that has sued the Elections Commission over the general elections poll date says the case will continue despite the official cancellation of the election process.

In January, a group of 18 political parties sued the commission at the Supreme Court over a plan to conduct the polls in June.

They wanted the court to issue an order compelling the commission to postpone the elections until peace is achieved.

The commission postponed the process last week, but it did not set a new date.

‘‘The case will continue as I told you the very bit of the case will be on 27th of this month.” The chairman of the SPLM-DC, Dr Lam Akol said.

His party is one of the political parties in the alliance.

The minister of information says the government and the commission have already done what the political parties wanted.

Michael Makuei Lueth says the alliance should have sued the government instead of the commission.

“How do you take the National Election Commission to the court meanwhile the National Elections Commission acted on the directives of the government?” He questioned, adding that:

“They should have taken the government to the Court but not the National Elections Commission which is executing a constitutional provision on the directives executive of the government.”

The government says the election was postponed to allow more time to restore peace.
