UNSC asked to impose arms embargo on rival parties

The United Nations Head of Peace Keeping Missions has called on the Security Council to impose an embargo on the warring parties in South Sudan.

Herve Ladsous says the situation in the country is appalling.

Reuter News Agency quotes him as saying that there should be a decision about an embargo because it is questionable that South Sudan’s resources are going into buying weapons.

Last week, the council imposed sanctions on six commanders from both the government and the opposition forces for obstructing peace.

“What really should be looked at is the possibility of more sanctions towards more leaders,” he said.

“I do think that there should be a decision about an arms embargo, because it is really completely questionable that the very meager resources that the country has go into buying more weapons.”

Diplomats said the council could not agree on imposing an arms embargo when it set up the sanctions regime in March.

Instead the Security Council just threatened such a measure.
