Netherlands Ambassador calls for speedy implementation of the peace agreement

A representative of the Dutch government in South Sudan is urging the parties to the signed agreement (on resolving the conflict in South Sudan) to immediately embark on its full implementation.

Ambassador Robert van den Dool says further delays in the implementation of the peace agreement only results into more suffering of civilians.

Over the past few weeks, the government and the SPLM-in Opposition have been sending mix signals on the exact number of SPLM-IO advance team that are supposed to return to the country from Ethiopia.

According to the peace agreement, the IO officials are supposed to have been in the country within 90 days after signing the agreement in August.

Only the SPLM- Former Detainees returned last month.

Ambassador van den Dool says all parties should be committed to the provisions of the agreement as signed.

“The peace process is a complicated process. Any delay should be avoided as much as possible. We should work together as all parties to make the peace work and to bring peace as soon as possible,” He said.

He also said that both the SPLM in Opposition and the government should end the war for the sake of peace.

There have been reports of violations of the ceasefire in Upper Nile, Unity and Jonglei States.
