The U.S Senate Committee on Foreign Relations is holding a hearing in Washington today on the topic; “failure of leadership in South Sudan”.

The Senators are expected to discuss the causes of the delay in the implementation of the agreement on the resolution of the conflict in South Sudan.

The hearing will be attended by the Special Envoy to Sudan and South Sudan, Ambassador Donald Booth, Bob Leavitt from the Bureau for Democracy, and John Prendergast of the Enough Project.

The panelists will make statements on the lack of will by South Sudanese leaders to end the conflict.

But an official from the South Sudan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has criticized the theme for today’s hearing.

Ambassador Mawen Makol said the topic of today’s discussion is irrelevant to the facts on the ground.

“Failure to do what when the government is actually implementing the peace and the TROIKA of which the US is party to it, has acknowledged the effort and even responded to our request for financial assistance,” He said.

Since the conflict broke out in December 2013, after a political dispute within the ruling party, SPLM, Rights Groups have reported violations and abuses against women and children by both parties to the conflict.

A report by the African Union also gives details about crimes committed in the conflict.

Today’s U.S Senatorial hearing is under the theme: Independent South Sudan: A Failure of Leadership.

The second panelists will include Princeton Lyman, Senior Advisor to President Obama, Former Special Envoy to Sudan and South Sudan and Mr. Adotei Akwei, the Managing Director, Government Relations at Amnesty International, USA.
