The speaker of the national assembly has recalled MPs from recess to amend the transitional constitution to extend the mandate of the government until 2017.

Thomas Kundu, Chairperson of the Information Committee in the National Parliament, the Minister of Justice will table a bill in parliament to amend the constitution.

“Given the current crisis that the country is undergoing and in connection with the legitimacy of the government which is almost approaching at the 9 of July, the government has decided and that is clear in article “101” as that the president can initiate amendment of the constitution,” Hon Kundu said.

“Therefore according to the article “196” of the constitution, he can call for a joint sitting for the two houses. The article which is going to be amended is article No “100” which talks about the turn of the office of the national legislature and the government.”

Hon. Kundu says the MPs will sit tomorrow to discuss the amendment.
