Leaders of the Greater Bahr el Ghazal region are urging their senior political leaders and thinkers to meet in Wau to discuss the challenges facing the region.

Lakes state caretaker Governor Maj. Gen Matur Chut told Eye Radio that the conference will cover issues such as security and the economy:

“We will discuss security problems, cooperation Problems, Development problems and reconciliation among the people.”

Three months ago, in February, the leaders from Warrap, Lakes, and Northern and Western Bahr el Ghazal states met in Aweil town and resolved to return stolen cattle and compensate families of those killed in raids.

It was also agreed that joint security forces should be deployed along the county borders.

However, over the recent past, there has been growing insecurity along the roads linking the states, with travelers being gunned down or robbed of belongings.

Cattle rustling and inter-clan retaliatory attacks allegedly staged by the youth are also common phenomena in the region.

Gen. Chut said “we will discuss problems of young people who are involved in rustling and highway robberies because what concerns us is security in Bahr el Ghazal state region.”
