Working hours: Boda-bodas react to 6am-6pm directive

All boda-boda riders have been asked to stop work by 6pm every day.

The Central Equatoria state government said boda-boda riders are allowed to operate between 6am and 6pm.

The state Minister of Information, Suba Samuel, told Eye Radio that the move is to protect the riders and their passengers from night robberies.

He said the move is also meant to protect the public from robbers who use the motorbikes to commit crimes.

“many criminal activities in Juba has been actually facilitated by the boda-boda riders; Not even that but even the boda- boda riders have been victims of robbery,” he said.

“Due to that, the city council with consultation with the security decided to come out with a by- law that regulates the movement of boda-boda at 6 in the morning to six in the evening.”

Eye Radio also spoke to some boda-boda riders to seek their views on the new order.

“I don’t have any idea of opposing what the city council has said, because they are our leaders within the town,” said boda-boda who requested anonymity.

“What they have mentioned is for our own security as well; we need not to ignore that. I personally start work from 8am and end at 6pm; I don’t see that this order can affect me personally. But maybe it affects other people.”

Another boda-boda who preferred anonymity does not welcome the bylaw:

“Actually, we can get money from morning up to 11pm, but from eleven up to five there is no work and again, we used to get money from 5 Pm up to 8:00Pm. So, I don’t know whether it will be possible for us because most of the people in Juba come late from places of work and most of them are using boda bodas.”

Central Equatoria state government has given instructions to the traffic police to implement the directives.
