The Speaker of the National Legislative Assembly says the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement will soon be forgotten if it does not improve living standard of the people of South Sudan.

Hon. James Wani Igga, who is also a senior member of the SPLM, made this remark during a ceremony to honor General Thomas Cirilo Swaka, who was recently promoted the SPLA deputy Chief of General Staff for Training.

“It is true you are the one [SPLM] who brought us the freedom, but people don’t eat freedom…….my friend; our people want to eat the real food. If we don’t see well, we the SPLM, even if we brought the freedom, we will be put in a sack.”

Hon. Igga believes that people have lost trust in the ruling party, the SPLM.

He says the people often do not enjoy the dividends of independence.

Basic social services remain scarce in South Sudan despite the country making more than $10 billion in oil revenue between 2005 and January 2012, according to the World Bank.

South Sudanese intellectuals and civil society groups argue that though the government is doing well, it should exert more effort on basic services such as health, education and roads.
