A bodyguard of the Vice President for Economic Cluster, who is said to be drunk, shot dead his colleagues before committing suicide on Friday, May 19, 2023, the vice president’s office confirms.

Nelson Leju, the Deputy Press Secretary in the Office of Dr. James Wani Igga said the intoxicated soldier also injured two others who are currently at a nearby hospital.

According to Leju, the incident happened at the residence of the Vice President at 9:30 AM.

The deputy spokesperson of the vice president said the soldier first started quarrelling with his colleague before committing the murder-suicide incident.

“This morning at the residence of the Vice President, a drunkard soldier opened fire and shot at his colleagues. He came to the residence early in the morning drunk, starting shooting his colleagues,” Leju said.

“He shot his colleague plus another Lt. Colonel. He actually shot three people, one died on the spot and the other two are injured, he shot himself. We have a casualty of two people dead.”

Nelson said security organs are now investigating the matter, and the situation is now calm.

He added that at the time of the incident, Vice President Dr James Wani Igga was not at his residence.

“The motive of the shooting is just misunderstanding, you know he just came drunk and started shooting like that. The two soldiers have been taken to a nearby hospital and their conditions are okay, they are not recovering from the injuries.”
