A member of the UN Security Council says US Government is preparing names 0f two individuals in South Sudan to be submitted to the council for sanctioning for their role in the continued fighting.

One name will come from the government side, and the other from the opposition.

In a statement to the press, the Russian Ambassador to the UN Security Council Vitally Churkin said the council convened yesterday at the request of the United States.

The council is prepared to consider “appropriate measures” including “an arms embargo and additional targeted sanctions” against those who violate the ceasefire, Ambassador Churkin said.

He said this followed a telephone conversation the Secretary of State, John Kerry had with President Salva Kiir two days ago, discussing concerns about the continued fighting.

Mr. Churkin says according to the statement of the US Representative to the council, Samatha Power, the two individuals are likely to face global travel ban and their assets will be frozen.

In July, the UN Security Council imposed sanctions on six commanders from the government and the SPLA-In Opposition forces.

From the government side, sanctions have been imposed on Major General Marial Chanuong Yol, Lieutenant General Gabriel Jok Riak, and Major General Santino Deng Wol.

And from the opposition, the sanctions target Major-General Simon Gatwech Dual, Major-General James Koang Chuol, and General Peter Gadet.
