More than 400 customers have been connected to electricity as the Nimule Electrification Project was officially launched in Eastern Equatoria State under the theme “Power Behind Progress.”

The project is being implemented by the South Sudan Electricity Corporation (SSEC) in partnership with Conex Energy Corp, with the aim of expanding access to reliable electricity and improving public services and economic activities in the border town.

The launch brought together Minister of Energy and Dams Moulana Agok Makur, SSEC General Manager Joseph Kur Ajak, Magwi County Commissioner Lam Gabriel, Nimule Mayor Caesar Langa Fuli, community representatives and officials from government institutions and Conex Energy.

Conex Energy Corp’s Nimule Electrification Project Operational Manager, Ronald Marcelo Lagu, thanked the Ma’di community for its cooperation during implementation.

He described the completion of the project as a major achievement made possible through the responsibility entrusted to Conex Energy by SSEC.

Nimule Mayor Caesar Langa Fuli said access to reliable electricity would support businesses, improve livelihoods and strengthen the delivery of public services.

The mayor also called for the rehabilitation of the Nimule-Juba road, describing it as an important national and regional transport corridor.

He further urged the government to consider allocating two percent of relevant revenues to Nimule and Eastern Equatoria, arguing that communities hosting economic activities should benefit from development.

Assistant Commissioner of Customs at the South Sudan Revenue Authority in Nimule, Gatluak Riek, said reliable electricity would help the authority strengthen its digital systems.

He said the high cost and logistical challenges of fuel had previously affected the full implementation of systems including e-tax, surveillance and digital payment platforms.

Riek said a stable electricity supply would allow the revenue authority to improve its operations and service delivery.

SSEC General Manager Joseph Kur Ajak described the launch as a significant milestone for Nimule and South Sudan.

He attributed the project partly to the strong bilateral relationship between South Sudan and Uganda, as well as cooperation between government institutions, the private sector and the local community.

Kur Ajak urged residents and local authorities to protect the electricity infrastructure and ensure it is used responsibly and sustainably.

In his keynote remarks, Minister Agok Makur commended Conex Energy for implementing the project and thanked the host community for its cooperation.

The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding electricity access across South Sudan and encouraged residents to use the new infrastructure to support businesses, livelihoods and local economic growth.

He also highlighted longer-term energy plans, including electricity transmission from Karuma Hydropower to Juba and the development of the Fula Dam project.

The Nimule project is expected to support businesses, public institutions and digital services while improving access to electricity for households and contributing to economic activity in the border town.

Officials at the launch stressed that while regional electricity cooperation and power imports can provide short- and medium-term solutions, South Sudan also needs to expand its own electricity-generation capacity.

The launch therefore marks both a local development milestone for Nimule and part of the country’s broader efforts to expand electricity access through regional cooperation, public-private partnerships and domestic energy development.
