Authorities in Western Bahr el Ghazal state say they are releasing inmates charged with minor crimes from the Wau Central prison due to over crowdedness in the cells.

They say most of the prisoners were convicted for crimes worth, less than 500 South Sudanese Pounds.

Prisons authorities say the cells are congested and most prisoners have no space to sleep.

The state Minister of Gender Child and Social Welfare, Honorable Nema Abas is says the prisoners will be released on Monday next week.

“It will pay the bails, because the jail is very full. In prison, there is no space for sleeping, some are sleeping on the floor, we are the ministry, we are so disturbed with information of jail is full, no sleeping space,” she said.
“We are inviting you, on Monday at 10:30 Am. We need you to come to the prison because the state government is going to release some people.”
Honorable Abas was addressing a gathering yesterday in Wau.
