UNHRC names members of its mission on human rights in S Sudan

The UN Human Rights Commission has named three members to a body that will assess the human rights situation in South Sudan since December 2013.

The three are Ms. Yasmin Sooka from South Africa, Mr. Kenneth Scott from USA, and Mr. Godfrey Musila from Kenya.

The President of the Human Rights Council, Ambassador Choi Kyonglim said Ms. Yasmin Sooka will be the leader of the team.

They will monitor and report on the situation of human rights in South Sudan and make recommendations for its improvement.

They will also assess the situation in order to establish facts in support of transitional justice, accountability, reconciliation and healing.

In a statement, the UN says the team members will provide guidance to the South Sudan government on transitional justice, accountability and reconciliation issues.

The Commission is scheduled to present a comprehensive report to the Human Rights Council at its 34th regular session in March 2017.
