Over 350 grass-thatched houses on Monday were destroyed when strong wind and rain struck Baliet County in Upper Nile State, the County Commissioner has said.

Commissioner Joseph Deng Agau says the stormy rains have left three people injured.

Angau pointed out that those injured were two children – a boy and a girl were cut by a flying iron sheet, while an elderly woman’s leg got broken after a hut collapsed on her.

He said some government infrastructure like the police station, veterinary center, and schools were also destroyed by the storm.

His house too is damaged in the incident on Monday, April 10, 2023.

“The rain was not heavy but the wind was so strong, destroying houses and government institutions like the police station and veterinary center, even the waiting room in my house as the commissioner is destroyed,” Agau told Eye Radio.

“This incident resulted in the injury of three people -two were cut by zinc and one broke the leg when a roof of a hut fell on her The loss counts to around 350 to 370”.

Deng Angau said some households have been left without shelter and is calling on humanitarian organizations to intervene in their suffering

“The wind was scary, most of the houses in Baliet county were destroyed and people are left without shelter,” said Angau.

“I call on humanitarian organizations to intervene and provide the people with shelter,

“These people need shelter and food because I visited the people and there is no assistance, there is no house in Baliet as most of them are destroyed”.
