Some of the markers who laid down their tools last week have been thrown out of hotels due to payment arrears, an official has told Eye Radio.

Last week, more than 400 of the makers laid down their tools in demand for a pay rise and allowance arrears.

Most of them came from various schools around the country to mark the final national secondary school examinations papers in Juba.

They said the Ministry of Education has failed cater for their feeding, accommodation and transportation for one month now.

The markers, who are staying in various hotels in the capital, also demand for a rise in payment for marking each paper from 5 to 10 pounds.

The Secondary School Examination markers Chairperson, Deng Benjamin says 30 of the teachers have been thrown out of hotels.

He urged the national Ministry of Education to sympathize with them.

“The days are counting and the teachers’ problems are increasing. So when I say teachers’ welfare is deteriorating, it is about accommodation and feeding,” Mr Benjamin stressed.

Meanwhile, the undersecretary in the Ministry of Education, Michael Lopuke, stated that they are waiting for money from the Ministry of Finance to pay the teachers.

He said: “It’s our obligation to pay them. We don’t have cash money at hand, but we’re asking the Ministry of Finance to release that money in order for us to pay those teachers who are marking the examinations.”

The teachers were also demanding for a raised payment for marking each paper from 5 pound to 10 pounds.
