Who’s in control of Doleib Hill?

Both the government and the SPLM in Opposition forces are claiming control of Doleib Hill, Upper Nile State.

The two sides clashed in the area this week. The opposition says it took control of the town yesterday, but the SPLA says it repulsed an attack on Tuesday and retained control.

“In Upper Nile and Jonglei, the security is stable. Only in the area of Doleb Hill, the rebels have been attacking and shelling SPLA positions across the River,” said Col Philip Aguer, SPLA spokesperson.

“…that was the day before yesterday – 23rd of this month – that the rebels shelled the SPLA position across the Canal mouse.”

The deputy military spokesperson of the SPLM in Opposition, Dickson Gatluak, announced today that their forces are in control of Dolieb.

Meanwhile, a Member of Parliament in Jonglei State says the opposition forces attacked and captured his constituency at the border with Upper Nile, two days ago.

Awuol Gajang Awuol, representing Atar area of Pigi County, says the information did not spread due to poor communication network.

He told Eye Radio that his constituents have been displaced and have no access to humanitarian assistance.

“They are still in the area of Atar because there is no accessibility of taking them to Malakal, because the rebel faction is in Cannal and Kaldak,” Hon Awuol said.

“I communicated with them this morning. They told me that there is fighting around Cannal area but those who are staying in Atar are okay today.”

He added that 21 people were killed in the fighting. Both the SPLA and the Opposition forces could not confirm the figure.

Doleib Hill was a mission station established by the American Inland Mission in the then southern Sudan, located approximately 10 miles (16 km) south of the city of Malakal, on the northern bank of the Sobat River.
