The Association for Media Development in South Sudan is urging Journalist to speak out about the violations they are exposed to while carrying out their duties.

There has been harassment, beating and intimidation of journalists in the country.

Alfred Taban, Chairperson of AMDISS cum Editor in Chief for Juba Monitor Newspaper, says those who commit crimes against journalists must be held accountable.

“If there is something  that happens to them [journalists], they should not keep  quiet  or silent,  they must  speak out that there is something  like this and that happening to them so that we can end impunity,” Mr Taban tells reporters.

“So, if this is known by all the people that there is crime against journalists, it will help stop these crimes, because crimes against journalists in South Sudan are becoming more in many forms.”

Mr. Taban urged the concerned authorities in the government to join effort in order to stop any form of crimes against journalists in the country.

“Unless the journalists speak out and officials get involved and take actions against those criminals who harass journalists, impunity against journalists in South Sudan will not end.”

Mr. Alfred Taban urged journalists in South Sudan to conduct themselves professionally, and respect the code of ethics to avoid problems with the government.
