Over 600 South Sudanese have fled Moyo district in Northern Uganda  back to South Sudan over security concernsfollowing recent disputes over border demarcation, authorities in Kajo-Keji  County have said.

The citizens of Moyo last week peacefully protested against what they called failure of their national governments to demarcate Uganda and South Sudan border in Wanu, a disputed land.

However, the demonstrations turned violent. Over eight South Sudanese houses were burned down.

Officials say South Sudanese nationals who were living there have arrived in Kajo-Keji with nothing in their hands, because their properties were destroyed.

“Over 600 south Sudanese residents in Moyo District who were been forced to leave their homes and move to south Sudan,” said Amule Charles, press secretary in the office of Kajo-Keji Commissioner.

Most of the people who fled the area are children and women.

Last month, authorities in Kajo-Keji County suspended Ugandan census, which they said was being conducted illegally in the county.

The Madi of Uganda and that of South Sudan have been disputing the border land – Wano.

Moyo County M-P, Hassan Fungaroo and other district leaders have called on the government of Uganda to resolve the dispute before it spirals out of control.
