Shortage of food items haunts Pibor

Author : | Published: Thursday, September 3, 2015

Authorities in Greater Pibor Administration say there is shortage of food items in the market.

The spokesman of the administration, Sam David, says bad roads have made it difficult to deliver goods to the area.

“Absolutely we have shortages of commodities because our road was dropped in April,” Sam David told Eye Radio, referring to a project to link Pibor to Juba by road, which was called off by the national government.
“Up to now, no new commodities have arrived in Greater Pibor,” he said.

Mr Sam also painted a grim picture of the general situation in the area, which became a separate administration from Jonglei State in May 2014, following the signing of a peace agreement between the government and the then rebel Cobra Faction of David Yau Yau.

“People are suffering… When you come and see Pibor, there is no water, food items and we are suffering really. Everybody knows,” Mr Sam said

More than 10,000 people, he continued, are at risk of hunger due to poor roads leading to the area and because of poor crop yields this year.
