Report on human rights violations to be verified by court

The Office of the President says a report on human rights violations committed during the crisis in the country will be made public after it has been verified by a court of law.

The Press Secretary in the Office of the President, Ateny Wek Ateny, says a committee was set by the government to investigate the atrocities.

He says it presented the report in October last year.

“It will be given to the court of law so that those who might have committed or might have taken law into their own hands are actually brought before justice,” Mr Ateny said.

“The report is inclusive of all the atrocities that were committed in the aftermath of the 15th of December.

But majority of that report was based on Juba because what seems to have taken momentum in the international [media] is the idea that people were killed in Juba on the 15th of December.”

Meanwhile, the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization says publishing the report to the public will ensure that justice prevails.

“I think it is a major step in terms of justifying credibility to our judiciary dependency, at the same time also justifying credibility on our commitment to respect Human Rights and to ensure that perpetrators of Human Rights are not allowed to go free or the level of impunity is addressed or impunity is not allowed to exist,” said Edmond Yakani, Executive Director of CEPO.

The report on human rights violations was presented to the office of the president under the leadership of Judge John Wol Makec.
