It could be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the South Sudanese who saw Pope Francis during his historic trip to the country. What could it possibly mean for the children and women who had the privilege to shake hands with the pontiff?

He had arrived in Juba on Friday with the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Moderator of the Church of Scotland, for the long-awaited Apostolic Journey to the heart of Africa. Here are the remarkable pictures of him interacting with people.

From the airport, he was welcomed by President Salva Kiir, and some children presented doves and flowers to him before he proceeded to the terminal on red carpet.

At the backyard of the airport, tens of thousands had lined the roads leading to the city, yearning to catch a glimpse of the 86-year-old.

Amid heavy security that barred him from the crowd, a young boy aged about 10 years had the best moment of his life when the Pope suddenly beckoned to him, briefly halting the convoy.

Eye Radio journalist captured the moment in which the boy walked to the small Fiat vehicle carrying the poniff who extended a hand to him.

Pope Francis called for and greeted the young boy before his convoy speed to the Presidential Palace to meet the country’s leaders.

On the second day of his visit, Pope Francis met clergy members at Saint Theresa Cathedral at Kator.

Many people had gathered outside the church compound waiting to see him exit the compound. As he was being wheeled out, a young boy handed him a 100 South Sudanese pounds note as a gift, which he gladly received.
