Author : | Published: Monday, April 27, 2015

The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has warned that South Sudanese refugees in Gambella are at risk of cholera due to shortage of latrines.

The camp in Ethiopia is hosting more than 34, 000 South Sudanese refugees.

In a statement today, the federation says at least 800 people share one toilet. This has resulted in open defecation within in the camps.

The Red Cross says it has trained over 300 South Sudanese refugees as volunteers, to lead in campaigns to maintain hygiene.

The volunteers are tasked with cutting the grasses short to encourage people to use the latrines.

The Red Cross says it has also launched an appeal of more than one million Swiss Francs to provide life-saving assistance to the refugee.
